Hello From Herbs & Things:)Each species is a masterpiece, a creation assembled
with extreme care and genius.
Edward

In the last
newsletter I was so excited about the fun Gab session, I forgot
to mention and say Thank-you to Denise and Jen for their generous donations for
the Medicine Wheel?
Thank you girls...and also thank you to everyone that
brought such delicious foods to the Gab...it really was so much
fun.
I've been asked...What are they
doing down on Heath road near Hayes Hollow?
Answer...from
what I understand they are drilling a new gas well.
Does this mean they are
Fracking?
Well there seems to be a difference of opinion.
Wondering
myself, I searched to see if Fracking and Well drilling were different or
the same thing...some say different, some say the same. Some say the fracking is
the finishing task after the natural gas well is drilled...
here..http://www.nytimes.com/gwire/2011/05/13/13greenwire-baffled-about-fracking-youre-not-alone-44383.html?pagewanted=all
Fracking
Vertically is legal, Horizontal Fracking is not. And from what I was
told they are vertically drilling this new gas well. What is the difference in
Vertical and Horizontal fracking, just as it reads. It's the horizontal fracking
that is the most detrimental to the earth because of the chemicals used and the
upset it causes.
Read here about the Difference between Horizontal
and Vertical Fracking...http://marcellusdrilling.com/2012/03/new-yorks-40-year-history-of-yes-fracking/
Believe it or not, vertical gas well drilling
has been going on in NY for more years than most of us know. Probably
even before the first natural gas well used in Ferdonia NY in 1861. I remember
my mother and father talking about this house had a coal furnace when they
bought it, and was one of the first houses to get natural gas in this area, 60
years ago. Which they said yes too and signed a line/ property lease agreement,
in or around1950-51.

Gas, which dates back to when the Native Americans were one of the
first users of natural gas when they lived near Lake Erie... http://www.naturalgas.org/overview/history.asp
and
Apparently sometimes, I must be bombarded to be
reminded to do something. Such as search what Flicker 'speaks'
of.
Flicker came to me a couple weeks ago...first time I was
driving behind a car that had to slow and swerve around one standing in the
road. Then it was my turn to drive around it and as I was admiring it's beauty,
telling it too it needed to get out of the road ...it watched me look at it.
Once I got by, it walked away. I knew then Flicker was 'speaking' to me. Did I
search the meaning? No.
A couple days later...same thing
happened, and again Flicker stared at me while I went around it, telling it,
"it's not safe being in the road. Did I search it's meaning? No not
yet.
However Flicker is persistent. A couple days later putting up the open
sign for the shop, one was staring at me from inside the horse corral. I said,
"oh yeah, I need to search what message you have." Again, did I? NO.
Then
with a last ditch effort to get my attention, Saturday driving back from the
Farmers Market, one flew straight towards the windshield of the Jeep. I thought
for sure I was going to hit it...lucky it swerved just in time.
Did I look up
it's message this time...Yes. I didn't want Flicker getting hurt trying to get
my attention.
What does
Flicker 'Speak' of...
Connections to New Rhythm in life, Growth
and healing love...Especially around the summer solstice...
According to Sun
Bear, Chippewa Medicine Man, it speaks of Strong Sun Moon in Medicine Wheel
Astrology
(Read about The Medicine Wheel Vision...http://www.ewebtribe.com/StarSpiderDancing/sunbearvision/)
This corresponds to
the period between June 21-July22 or the sign in Cancer in traditional
astrology
To the Native Americans Flicker is a particularly courageous
bird.
The red on the head and black crescent on the breast are
symbolic reflecting new and bounding leaps of spiritual growth.
( OH No,
growing pains again???:)
The red reflects stimulation of the head and throat
chakras
Change of Physical and Material life.( hope this is good
changes:)
And funny too, Kathy H. said my astrology chart said the same
thing, sometime in June, things changing for me...Hmmmmmmmm, and didn't Raven a
month or so ago 'speak' of the same things....changes?
Number
One=Beginnings, Originality, Leader
Red=Passion
Strength
Black=Protection,
Birth
Brown=Grounded, New growth
And by the way, since
I've studied it's message, I've not seen Flicker again:)
Speaking of the summer solstice, it will be here
before we know it..Thursday June 21st.
From Flickers
message, I think I am suppose to make sure and honor the Summer Solstice. I know
I'll probably be walking the Wheel and invite anyone else to do a Solstice Walk
that evening if anyone is interested. Let me know if you are interested. Then
I'll know if I should put something together.
The summer season
is about seeds planted that come to fruition, and seeing what
we've sowed and worked for.
It is also the season for the Wise One
within, a good time for physic development and connecting to nature and or
guides, god, angels or nature spirits.
The angelic powers of summer are with
Auriel/Uriel 'the light of God'. Auriel is the voice of wisdom, and the one to
check with when making a tough decision.

Remember
snake came to me weeks ago and was hanging around the house and
garden? I'd not seen her in a while and thought...maybe she
left. But when I thought about it... it didn't
feel like she'd left. I just knew she was still here.
The
other morning Rick and I were talking about her and I told him, "Hmm I keep
calling that snake a her. I wonder how you can tell the difference between the
male and female? But maybe it didn't make any difference, I was pretty sure it
was a female, it felt feminine, and the first time I saw her, my very first
thought, she's going to have babies.
Sure enough, she's a
she..because Tuesday there in the garden a baby snake and she was sunning
herself. I bet there is more than one baby too. Snake has that great message
too, about healing and shedding of old ways...
I find it kind of
funny in a way, because I am not real fond of snakes, probably because
I don't understand them, to have one take residence in my garden and have her
babies there, where I'll want to watch every time I go in there to pull
weeds.
The funny part is, this is a perfect example that God has a sense of
humor:)
Let the canning begin!
Yep I started. Sunday I canned strawberries. From a flat which
is 8 quarts, I got 16 pints and some for strawberry shortcake. I am not sure if
I'll can any more, but I got a good start on the season. Soon it looks like
beets will be ready, so here comes the yummy pickled beets. I am not sure about
the turnip. I think I waited to long to thin them. It was difficult because they
got big...so I am hoping I did not disturb them to much and they will grow.
Potatoes are coming finally, They took a while to sprout, But in one day I went
from 16 plants emerging to double that of 32 then the next day triple that and
so on. Soon the rows will be running over with green...yeaaaaa.
Squash plants
are coming nicely too.
Peppers and tomato's have blossoms, and onions are
doing good. July, I'll have garlic for the Farmers Market.
Speaking of canning and of course canning is
about 'stocking' up too, the other day while mowing I was told
we need to stock up on flour, and I also got a sense of urgency, like a couple
weeks urgency?(I know their time and ours is different so couple weeks could be
off) with the stock up thing too. So now is the time to go where you go, and get
stocked up on shelve stable items. I know I am.
What's the worst that can
happen, I am wrong....But... there will be lots of stuff in the
pantry:)
Be well
Laugh often
Love large
Dig in the
dirt
Grow a garden
and may the sun light your way

Heron 'Speaks'~Cedar Benches~Newsletter from 6/8/12
Hello From Herbs & Things:)The moment one gives attention to anything, even a blade
of grass, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in
itself.
~Henry Miller~
Wow, it's Friday already! The week flew by and here I am just writing to you. I've been playing catch up mowing like I am sure everyone has. We so needed the rain, but after a few days enough was enough, plus it was a little to chilly.
I remember a summer when I was a young girl about 11 or 12, even then I thought, it was a perfect summer. The sun came out every day with clear blue skies and rained a perfect rain during the nights watering everything just enough. I remember it was low humidity, the flowers and trees were beautiful because of the equal amount of sun, and rain, with almost perfect not to hot days. Yesterday was close to that perfect summer, but a bit to cool. 'Speaking' of flew by, every time I walked or mowed the Wheel this week, Heron payed a visit. First two then one Blue Heron, then Green Heron, first one then two Green Heron. I'll be curious to see if Heron comes today.
Heron Speaks of
Aggressive Self Determination and Reliance
It speaks of walking a different path than others. (funny how were just talking about that at Spiritual Gab Wed. and I mentioned about me walking to my own beat. Always have even as a child.)
Heron helps one follow their own path...(and wasn't that what a couple newsletters was about...My and Herbs & Things path and it was going to be different:)
Heron is a wader, signifying wading through the waters of life. It speaks of grabbing opportunities (hence the message I received in the Wheel Tuesday, "This is the year of opportunities)
Heron's color specifically Green Heron speaks of living life in ones own unique style and balance between earth and air, knowing what's best for you with out the prompting of others.

Spiritual Gab cookout was fun, fun, fun. What a wonderful evening and gathering of friends and like minded people. Thank goodness the cool breeze settled and we were able to stay outside to eat. When the evening turned cooler ( it seemed right on time) we came inside, where we talked about the book 'The Circle Maker'( inspired by Honi the circle maker), God , prayers, the Medicine Wheel and listening to that voice and learning how to tell when it is 'the voice' and not your own thoughts.
We discussed how often it's hard telling 'the voice' and your own thoughts apart because the difference could be compared to identical twins, if you don't know them it's hard to tell which is which. I was asked how I know the difference? The best way I can describe it is, a knowing deep in your being. It's a feeling, that when it's there you know it, but if you question it that often means it's not 'the voice' and it's your own thoughts dictating to you. It's such a fine line, kinda of like one particular music note amongst many that until you train your ear, it will just blend in, but with practice and more practice...ah ha...you'll hear the note no matter where it's placed or when you hear it. I'm still practicing hearing that note.
I love that fact that no matter at what age you are at in your life, you can learn something new every day. Last Sunday at the Farmers Market I learned of the Spittle bug. It's an odd name isn't it...also called the Frog Hopper. It's not a destructive pest, but more a of nuisance. We've all seen them or actually saw their protective cover and didn't' know there was a bug under there. It's that foamy stuff that looks like someone spit on the plant...usually in the joint areas.
That's a Spittle Bug and the bubbles of 'spit' are what it produces to hide itself. You don't need pesticide to rid your plants of them, just a hosing or a good rain will do the trick. Read more about the Spittle bug...http://gardening.about.com/od/insectpestid/a/Spittlebugs.htm
I had a big surprise the other day. John E. someone I knew from the 4-H days, now in his late 40's came to visit the Wheel. He then brought his children one by one and was blown away from what he felt and heard. We were talking about all he felt, and I mentioned, I'd been instructed to put four more benches in the Wheel, but I've not bought the lumber and made them yet. But I will.
Friday while packing up for Farmers Market he and his brother pull in the driveway and he says "Kellie can you come here for a minute, I have something to show you."
I walked over to the pickup truck and there in the back were 5 beautiful cedar benches he and his brother Bill, crafted for the Wheel. It was cedar wood he said he had laying around and didn't know what he was ever going to do with it'. But then, we talked:)
He was so excited and got more excited when he saw the look on my face. I told him of course he didn't know what he was going to do with the cedar, but God and that cedar knew exactly where it was going, they were just waiting for the right time.
He got more excited when I told him, because he gifted the benches to Wheel he would have to be part of them going to the Wheel. So Wednesday morning at 9 AM, he came here and we went with sage, tobacco, Turkey feather in hand, and took the benches to the Wheel and one to the Memory Garden. One by one he offered and placed his gift. It was more emotional than he had anticipated. It was a wonderful morning and experience for both of us.
One reason I love the benches so much is not just the time and effort that went in to them but oh they smell wonderful.
Did you know that cedar is one of the best aromatherapy scents to relax you emotionally and physically and also help you to 'see' and 'hear' better. It is one of the oldest biblical essential oils that symbolized abundance, fertility and spiritual strength.
To Native Americans, Cedar wood oil was not only used to cure physical illnesses, it is used to cleanse the spirit, ward off evil, and to communicate with nature, both plants and animals. Through-out history, cedar wood oil has been used by many cultures, in different ways to prevent or cure illnesses. So come to the Wheel, sit on the bench and you too might be able to communicate with nature better.
Even as a child, I always ate the egg yolk and left the white behind. I know I've mentioned the egg before, but I was intrigued by the fact its the egg yolk I always want even today as an adult, when I should 'know better' because we are always told, don't eat those bad eggs.
Well, as per instructions, I searched to learn again a little more about the Egg, specifically this time about the Yolk.
I was excited to learn that my body was telling me the truth and the yolk is in fact very good for you. The yolk of the EGG is jam packed full of nutrients your body needs. The White far less. What I didn't know is that, the Egg always quoted as being so high in cholesterol, has armed its self with things that help lower and keep your cholesterol in balance. It also gives us that so important Vitamin D and often much needed B vitamins.
The cholesterol fighting factor in the egg as in grass fed beef...is CHOLINE. Amazing how if you let it, Nature knows what's best for us.
So I find it kind of funny, even when "they" said eggs were bad for you, that I never stopped eating them, especially the yolks...this must be why, even in the winter, I've never needed a vitamin D supplement, nor any B's and if I try to take either of these in supplement form my body tells me...UH NO.
Anyhow, if you are not fond of or don't have the income to take supplements, then let me introduce you to the simple, underestimated, where you'll find an abundant of nutrients in one of most simple and natural packaged foods to date...The EGG.
Important though is eating the right eggs, which are Eggs from chickens that are free to scratch, peck and eat bugs. These healthier more nutritious good for you eggs are higher in Omega 3's, D, B's and Choline.(it must be the bugs:)
And did yo know eating Eggs can help with the fight against, depression, anxiety, asthma, Alzheimer's, obesity, and believe it or not that high cholesterol we all worry about...because of the Choline...

Our Infrastructure and the 'Stocking up message' May 30th Newsletter
Hello From Herbs & Things
It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see.
~Henry David Thoreau~
Finally a little bit of refreshing rain...Ahhhhhhhhhh.
What a wonderful weekend though to start off the summer. I hope every one's memorial weekend was safe and you reflected on those who have and are serving our country. Without them we would not be the country of free speech, will or the land where dreams can come true. But, most importantly, now that the weekend of remembrance marked on our calendar is over, we should not forget to continue to be grateful and thank them for a job well done everyday. So please continue to remember those who have and will put their lives on the line for our beliefs, beyond when the calendar says we should...God Bless.
I love, love, love the raised garden beds. I am already looking forward to next years garden and putting in more raised beds! Or maybe, it won't be to late, Rick will be on vacation the week of June 9th, then again maybe not, he wants to try and finish the last four windows in the house, and then we can get it sided. Plus, Spirit gave me an awesome idea for Kellie's new Reiki Room, I am so excited and I know...after much thought and wondering for many months, that this is the right idea...yea...I'll share it once we get started on the project, maybe when Rick is on vacation. I am sooooooo excited:
The response the last...very long...newsletter generated was wonderful. I was glad. Because it made many of you pause for a moment to realize the why of your struggles and unhappiness and that it is important to take the time in finding...The Who YOU Are, what God has intended for you and the importance of what you do. Even if right now to you... that ' what you do thing' seems trivial or without purpose as opposed to what others are doing, and to remember what ever it is you are doing, or even not doing is an important cog of the Wheel of a great plan, and if one cog does not do what it was made to do, then the Wheel will be out of balance. Thank you so much for all your input, questions and sharing...I love it. I have a couple comments in the What Readers have to say portion of this newsletter. Again thank you, I was so nervous putting that email out, but alas, again Spirit was right:)
I know I said, I wasn't suppose to say anything anymore, but there's been prompting for me to mention it again...
Stock up for Winter. Relearn the basics of cooking meals at home, eating as a family, having supplies in the home to do this, supporting local farmers so the farm land is not depleted.
Winter as I believe I finally figured out is metaphorical for...hard or difficult times...or less than perfect circumstances...like being with out electric for weeks.
Then I learned a little about our countries infrastructure and...the stock up thing had more punch to it.
The USA's Infrastructure is in decline...http://theeconomiccollapseblog.com/archives/americas-crumbling-infrastructure ...(watch the mini video)
and the report card is not good...though this report card is 3 years old, we've, I don't think, have seen much of an improvement,
http://www.infrastructurereportcard.org/
We don't think of our infrastructure often and we do take it for granted, even though we drive on declining roads every day. What we do know and see because it affects our day to day travels is our roads and bridges are in poor shape. But what we need to understand are the consequences of this declining infrastructure via the big picture. Our infrastructure is not just our roads, but includes, our electricity sources, dams-levees, lakes, rivers, canals, airways, roads and bridges, and that this infrastructure that is a 'main line' of our existence in this country today, is rapidly deteriorating threatening to cut us off, from many of our food and good sources. The way I understand it, if our infrastructure collapses then we as a country will collapse. If we look and pay attention we can see the signs that this catastrophic event is well on its way to coming true.
Think about it, if just one part of our infrastructure, such a the electric grid were to go down, for what ever reason, and we were without electricity for a week, two weeks or three, the impact could be catastrophic. What impact would it have on us. It would make us vulnerable to many things. No electricity, means...no gasoline, in some homes no heat, no banking, no subways, trains, airplanes, grocery store freezers to keep foods cold, our own fridges and freezers not working, water pumps not pumping water, toilets not flushing, no driving to the store for groceries 4 times a week, no air tracking devices or satellites to tell us what's going on, no radio, TV...and other things we take for granted every day. Are we prepared as a country to be able to survive if our infrastructure were to collapse? Are we ready to live as a third world country? Does this mean you should be 'stocked up'. I believe so.
Another small part of our infrastructure in danger is our bridges. Most of our bridges are over 50 years old and are quickly deteriorating and were not made to handle the volume of today's travel. And the possibility of them collapsing is high, cutting connections to many areas that supply us food and goods. Thus... if we have no bridges, trucks can not bring in foods, goods, nor can we have access to other cities or states we depend on. Because we depend so much on our bridges and roadways to keep us connected and running, we've eliminated or closed many of our water ports, making it difficult for ships to come in and out. What about the canal that use to be the 'gate way' to and from different areas?
What If one of the dams out of the 85,000 dams in the USA alone...were to collapse or have their earthen walls breach, which because so many of them are in such decay with no inspectors to inspect them or people to repair them, they are listed as high risk dams, it would kill thousands of people and animals and wipe out two or three states at once, much of which is farm land, by flooding the lands in no less than two feet of water 100's of miles away or at least 40 feet in areas closest to the dams.
I could go on and on about the other infrastructures that could affect our way of life.
But instead I'll just say...again...Stock Up...what could it hurt.
This message I think was confirmed by a visit from a Red Squirrel and Chipmunk
What does Squirrel 'speak' of...
Activity and Preparedness.
They are most often seen digging up and burying seeds and nuts, stocking up for a later time
Red squirrels are the sentinels of the forest...and tell of strangers.
With their chattering and scolding they are literally reporting what's going on...in the forest.
Red=Passion and Strength
Negative qualities of Red...anger, aggression,impulse
Which brings me to something I wrote a few nights ago in my bedside journal
Kalamunda (my spelling Calamunda, can't tell a c from a k while half awake:)....
a word derived from two Noongar (an indigenous Austrailian language) words:
Kala meaning 'home' and munda meand 'forsest', hence 'A home in the forest'.
And then there's Snake...a Grey snake (garter snake) that has taken residence around the house and garden.
For about three weeks now, I see 'her' where ever I go, in the garden, by the decorative pond, in the garage, just laying in the grass looking at me as I pack the shop up for Farmers Market. Though snake is not one of my favorite animals, I find them interesting, and they are beneficial to have around the garden. Snakes eat insects and unwanted rodents, and not only are they beneficial to the garden they 'speak' volumes too...
What does Snake 'Speak' of...Movement, Transition, Change and Healing
Look for changes in conditions and movement to new life and a rebirth of powers of creativity and wisdom.
The ability to absorb more knowledge.
Higher forms of discrimination and spiritual idealism.
COOL:)
Grey=Initiation, imagination
Yellow=Communication, optimism, inspiration.
More people have mentioned the animals seem different this year and we've discussed this too at Spiritual Gab.
Even, people who are not really into that the animals 'speak' have noticed the animals seem 'friendlier' or not as afraid.
Have you noticed you can walk closer to birds before they fly away? Or deer? Have you noticed there is just something different about the animals? Have you noticed that they seem to look right at you, as if they have something to say? If you have noticed, do you have any idea why?
I think...it's because the 'veil' is thinner, and that veil, as Linda read in the bible, might be our own personal veil lifting. Meaning that because the animals are already connected to the higher source all the time and now because we are becoming more 'aware' and connected, the birds and animals don't fear us or are as leery of us as they used to be. Because we have a better understanding.
Do you have any ideas on this? Have you had experiences where you feel more in touch with the animals... If so, please I'd love to hear.
Have you noticed too, Orioles, so many people have Orioles this year near their houses.
I've had a pair for a few weeks and I am so enjoying them. In fact they were walking around on the porch, and trying to get some dried nectar off the porch that had dripped on the concrete...So cute...

Herbs & Things Email May 22nd...Being true to who you are

to know the difference (from the Serenity prayer)
Reinhold Neibuhr
Hello it’s me, MIA Kellie. I’ve not
forgotten you…I've been getting gardens in, putting fences around the gardens to
keep unwanted critters out, mowing lawns and the Medicine Wheel and trying to
listen to ‘the voice’.
Before I get into what they want me to share now…I want to say…I had such a Great time at the Colden Community’s first Farmers Market. I am so looking forward to being there again Jun 2nd! What a wonderful job the girls from the Bread of Life did putting the market together. Thank you!
Ok so onward…amazingly what nature and the Medicine Helpers have been ‘speaking’ to me is right. Each animal that has come to me of late, ‘speaks’ of a shift. This was also confirmed at the last spiritual gab through Kathy H and her knowledge in astrology, and most recently in what I thought at first a disturbing dream of my house falling down, which merely signified letting go of old thoughts. So as you read in the June events page, the direction of 'things' at Herbs & Things is changing just a little. You may want to get a cup of tea and a snack this newsletter is long
Even as I write this, it’s with uncertainty of why I need to share ALL of this because it ‘seems’ to be so much, but I will because I believe it’s what I am suppose to do. Plus I received conformation of sharing it all, through a book and also at the Colden’s Farmers Market…so here goes…
Spirit/God/ The voice has been working diligently with me about the struggles I’ve had of late. I never was one to be jealous of what others had, nor did I care to keep up with what others were doing or had. I always walked and danced to my own tune and was content and happy with where I was, what I had and what I was doing. Life to me, in spite of any hardships put in front of me...was never a struggle.
To struggle and endure are two different things. I've had hard times, no money, no work, death, sickness, heartache; abuse...many things that go along with living life...yet though sometimes it was hard, I never struggled with day to day life.
So imagine my feelings, when I started struggling in everything I was doing and everything I was not doing. I found it a struggle to be. A struggle to lose weight, ‘hear’, ‘see’, get motivated, live life in general. I wondered why I was struggling when I did not struggle when I was instructed to put the Wheel in and that was no small feat. Why were so many other things that were huge in my life not a struggle, but now I was struggling with even the simple things of every day life?
The wake up came with that large brick at the Tree Whisperer workshop, I spoke of in the last newsletter, that not only made me see, but also made we take another look at what it is I am suppose to be doing, realizing I was not listening to the guidance of Spirit/God. Hence the struggle was not in what I was trying to do, but instead in what I was not doing.
What I was not doing was not heeding 'the guidance” and most importantly I was not being true to who I am, my calling, walking my own path and trusting that I will reach my goals no matter how impossible they may seem if I don’t rush it, and if only I trust.
‘They’ also have been trying to show me this revelation, through revisits to when I was a volunteer leader of the Galloping 4-H'rs horse 4-H club. Not through all the things we did, but more importantly…what the 4-H was about.
Before I get into what they want me to share now…I want to say…I had such a Great time at the Colden Community’s first Farmers Market. I am so looking forward to being there again Jun 2nd! What a wonderful job the girls from the Bread of Life did putting the market together. Thank you!

‘They’ also have been trying to show me this revelation, through revisits to when I was a volunteer leader of the Galloping 4-H'rs horse 4-H club. Not through all the things we did, but more importantly…what the 4-H was about.
It was a time when Rick and I could barely scrape enough money together to have two dollars in our wallet, put gas in the vehicles, which were two old vehicles that were nickel and diming us to death.... yet...some how, some way, because the 4-H was fueled and driven by God/ Spirit, there was always money, much of which at first was taken from our own empty pockets, for ribbons, classes, judges, gas for trucking, weekend clinics, picnics, mallets for the polo team, and every year a wonderful year end awards dinner, where everyone, about 80 or so people, young and old, got some sort of an award. And though we had no money, it was a time of great richness and happiness.
In didn’t matter that leading the group involved many hours, of sunburned, dusty, tiring, work. Many miles driving and hauling, lots of weekends spent with kids, showing, camping, basically horses and kids all over the place. Sometimes I even wondered why I did it, but at the end of the day and I saw what the children had learned, the fun they had, and the confidence they acquired...thus something they’d take with them to adulthood... I knew why and it was all worth it, worth more than the last dollar from our pockets.
So I finally get what ‘they’ve’ been trying to tell and show me…I’d been listening to my non guided voice and comparing myself to others, of what life says I should be doing, instead of my calling. My calling of to help, heal, guide and direct those who come in to my life. My job or calling is to help people see their potential and reach their goals and remember their goals are not mine. To let them know they are heard and with right action and right prayer that even though there might be detours, if you 'listen' you will have everything that can make you happy in life, and that happiness is not revolved around the dollar, a fancy house, new cars or having it ‘all’.
So the reason I was struggling with this huge dream and goal I have for Herbs & Things, myself and many others, is because I was trying to force movement of those dreams and goals, which are so big they look impossible, because without a lot of money, it in my mind can never be, which caused me frustration. Thus I was shown through revisiting the 4-H, if I let God/Spirit/that higher source take the reins nothing is impossible. Hence…how they showed me was...
I was taken back to that time of two dollars in my pocket, on a summer day in 1977, as I was driving to go give a riding lesson, and I heard, "any where you see horses in pastures, write a letter stating you are starting a 4-H for horses and wonder if those horses would like to bring their kids.."
HUH? I never even did 4-H myself, I showed strictly AHSA. What an odd idea?
Yet as soon as the idea came to me, I felt excitement deep within. So I composed that letter, sent it out locally to any home where I saw horses in the pastures and asked them if those horses would like to bring their kids to join a 4-H.
After a couple weeks into the 4-H I asked my sister if she'd be interested in being an assistant leader, and she said yes. For the first couple of years, we made the kids ribbons by hand from 1 inch wide ribbon and yarn made into pompoms that went on top. Each class had placings 1st-6thwith the placing written in glitter, along with now the name of the club, The Galloping 4-hers. We made enough ribbons for 20 classes with 6 places for one clinic a month, then for the year end Family Brawl, which there were always enough ribbons for everyone.
The Galloping 4-H’rs grew from 5 kids into 27 and their horses. It was a successful, family orientated, fun filled group, run solely on love of what I was doing, donations from families, local sponsors for the polo team (a team that went to the national play offs, and came in 2nd) Flickengers food service donations of food (when ask by my mother) for the year-end banquet, and of course all under the direction by that higher source, all things that could not be done with those two dollars in my pocket.
So when 'they' tell me again, its not about the money, it's about being true to who I am, I think I finally get it, and it makes me realize too, sometimes to reach our goals, we have to do something not related to our goals at all.
This I was shown by being taken back again to a time of the Galloping 4-h'rs, when they showed at Erie County Fair. There were a lot of different classes for the children and their horses, Pleasure, Trail, Games, Walk Trot, Fitting and Showmanship...and more.
I had one young man his goal was… he and his horse be Gaming Champions at the fair. Thus he could not see the why of, nor did he like, doing Pleasure, equitation or most of all Fitting and Showmanship.
Protesting against the fitting and showmanship he’d say to me, “I don't need to know Fitting and Showmanship Kellie to win in games. I just need to run fast, know my patterns, and have my horse fit. I don't need to get all dressed up, acting all fancy and parade my horse around and show how much control and etiquette I have and that I know the parts of the horse. They should know I have control I can run my horse at full speed, steer her, and stop her. If that's not control I'd like to know what it is?"
My response, "Here’s the deal, you want to game, you MUST do Fitting Showmanship. But, you can't just muddle through it, You have do it like it means the world to you, like you love it and it’s the Fitting and Showmanship championship you want to win not the games. And if you can’t convince me, it looks like you love doing fitting and showmanship… then sorry you still don’t show at the fair."
I wasn’t even sure why I was so adamant about him doing the Fitting and Showmanship. I can tell you, he was not happy, but he did it.
It came fair time, he did marvelous in the games...he tied for Game Champion with a girl. The two each had their choice of how to break the tie, his, running poles, her’s fitting and showmanship. They chose, and then a coin was tossed to see who would win the pick for tie breaker. She won the toss...Fitting and showmanship was going to be the tie breaker class.
Long story short, he reached his goal of Gaming Champion through something he liked least...Fitting and Showmanship! There it was that thing that had nothing to do with the goal he wanted to reach but ultimately was the thing he needed to reach his goal.
After-wards, He came up to me and hugged me...and said..."Thank you Kellie for pushing me to do something I thought I'd never need. How did you know? I am so glad you were 'mean' and Made me do this. I am so glad. How did you know?"
I responded, "How did I know? I don’t know. It’s just something I knew you needed to do, but did not know why. Well now we both know the why.”
Which brings me back to my goal for and Herbs & Things, the community and nature, a goal that needs a lot of money…thus apparently if one reaches their goals by doing something that has nothing to do with the goals, I’ve been instructed that from now on, almost all classes and workshop at Herbs & Things, will be Free or by donation only. No more collecting money for the classes I, Kellie, offer… I’m still waiting for some answers on questions about the classes and lectures I teach, and as soon as I know…so will you
Oh…and one more thing. Since I’ve decided to listen and be true to who I am, and follow that path I am suppose to be on…I have no feelings of struggle, well maybe one struggle yet, weight. But I know that answer will come... when it is time.
Whew such a relief.

Wisdom in the Trees
Hello From Herbs &
Things:)There is always Music
amongst the trees in the Garden, but our hearts must be very quiet to hear
it.
~Minnie Aumonier~
The Optimal Health and Wellness seminar with Leesa and Becky was Awesome. There was loads of info and fun. It was so much fun in fact it wasn't over until almost 11:30 PM. Leesa and Becky have offered to come back again. I for one say yea.
I was in the Wheel Tuesday evening and wow what a difference a day, and a warm rain makes. I can hardly tell the difference between the spokes and the spaces in between the spokes. Sitting first in the meditation garden then in the Wheel I started to worry about not mowing and the Wheel looking unsightly, I was told, "don't worry about it, you'll have plenty of time to mow. And it's OK, as the grass grows, so does the energy." Hmph...didn't think of that. Still I want to mow:)
Well, it's happened again. Something I decided to do, was not about what I thought it was going to be about.
Did you ever decide to do something, and about half way on the drive there, think maybe you should turn around and go home, because it's such a nice day and you could be doing other things? That's what happened to me Sunday May 6th, about half way to a Tree Whisperer workshop given by Jim Conroy and Basia Alexander---held at the Ellwanger Estate in Rochester...http://ellwangerestate.com/blog/historic-neighborhood/the-ellwanger-estate/
Driving down the thruway, I was fighting with myself about spending such a nice day, other than at home with Rick, the animals, brushing the horses, mowing the lawn, and working in the gardens. Yet that little voice, kept telling me to go. That it will be good for me to go but with the understanding it was not for the reasons I thought. Oh boy, not this again, what the heck am I suppose to be learning now?
What other reasons would I be going to a Tree Whisperer Workshop other than learning how to better communicate with Trees!
You'd think I'd be used to this by now, but I still get a little upset when this happens. I mean I am going for one thing, and being told I will learn something else. However I was told repeatedly it was good for me to get away anyway for a day and just enjoy what comes. Home and the animals were being taken care of. So not to worry about getting home in rush to do chores, let the dogs out etc., and that the mowing and gardens, there will be plenty of time for that.
The Ellwanger Estate is beautiful...it's old with plenty of good vibrations from the ancestors.
The garden with it's old fruit trees, boxwood borders, ancient roses, fern peonies, and flowers, is beautiful too, and I enjoyed meeting Jim and Basia. But...what was I going to learn at the Tree Whisperer workshop other than learning to communicate with Trees?
It started when I got there early and decided to take a walk through the garden. As I was meandering around, enjoying the flowers, butterflies, trees and stopping to admire some tall pines, I thought I heard, "I am not happy" from one of the Trees. I did not know which one so I dismissed it.
Then in one instant in a garden 2 hours from home, I had the realization of how much I've accomplished through the beckoning of Spirit, that I almost cried. Good thing I was walking alone.
Please know, I am not trying to sound conceited, but OMG it was like someone hit me over the head with a large, very large brick, about the magnitude of what I have done just in the shear size of the Medicine Wheel. What was I thinking, putting myself in the position of all that mowing, planting, making benches, and caring not only for the Wheel, but the meditation, fairy and memory garden on top of the pastures, horses, lawn, shop, house etc! And what was the brick that hit me over the head? Walking through the estate garden I read a sign, " The Ellwanger garden is maintained by the Landmark Society."
OH---The land mark society, means not just one person takes care of this garden, which is 1/16 the size of the Wheel alone, though beautiful and many beautiful plants and trees, but it is maintained by many people. Not by one middle aged, grey haired slightly over weight woman, a John Deere tractor, mower, yellow shovel, and two dogs. WOW, I'd never thought of it in that way before.
As I was getting over amazed at it all, I realized, I am not alone...I maybe do most of the physical aspect of it alone, but I am not alone in the fact the ideas...fueled by Spirit and the voice of God are with me. My husband supports me, though he's not here to help most of the time, never putting a damper on ANYTHING or idea I come up with. I was then reminded too of what can be accomplished with the help of God and if you listen.
Then there was the workshop, where I was surprised just how much I do hear what the trees say. I realized this as Jim Conroy was healing a Beech Tree. I'd never been to this estate, with no idea of what goes on day to day, but that Beech Tree, told me it was very sad because it had lost a friend. I thought, this must be the Tree I heard earlier. So I ask, "Did a Tree recently in this tree's community get cut down?
Jim, shook his head, that he did not know. Basia, however, said "Oh, yes...just a few days ago. But there is a sibling sapling growing where the other old tree stood, and it has been left there to grow with the rest of the trees."
Jim looked at me, and said, "Wow, Good call, Good question. Good listening"
I told the Beech Tree about the sapling and we got emotional.
It was happy I had heard.
However what I did learn that I did not know, is that Trees can be healed as a community and they do not have to be of the same species.
Trees communicate through song, which is what the Wheel taught me but now I understand it better, which also confirmed the meaning of a message I gave a friend who questions she can hear and is connected to Trees.
That message to her was from Reinstein Park last year one day when Linda K and I were walking it....
I was told to tell Heidi..."stop and listen to the music in the trees".
Now I get it, they want her to listen to them, because she can!
There were some other things I learned too, but I've already taken up enough of your reading time...But I must share one more thing... after coming home, I was told to research the Ellwanger history again because there was something I'd find interesting that was not told in the guided tour of the garden.
The entrance to the estate and paths through the estate and surrounding area, was once a, high Esker , trail used by the Senecas, to travel around lake Ontario to the Mississippi. Part of that trail is now called Indian Avenue and goes through the Rochester Cemetery..
Ok so what I learned was good, even though I did not learn what I expected to learn and I got to meet an old Beech Tree and it's wisdom:)

Raven 'Speaks'
Hello From Herbs & Things:)
Use the talents you possess-for the woods would be a very silent place if no birds sang except for the best.
~Henry Van Dyke~
Apparently the universe has something in store for me. Why?
Well the last time I saw a bird you just don't see in this neck of the woods, which was the Eagle, two years ago almost to the month, it foretold of great awakenings, a closer connection to God and to Spirit, and not long after, that's when much opened up, including Me and the Wheel.
So, last week, I was surprised by two Ravens sitting on the telephone pole by the East entrance of the Wheel. As when Eagle came, it took me a moment to recognize, they were Raven's, because you just don't see them in this area. Crows yes, Ravens no. I immediately knew they brought a message of something and that I better keep my eyes and 'ears' open. I was excited. I did not get nervous about what many think Raven represents, because I intuitively knew that Raven was not here speaking of death, but it too, like Eagle came with a message of a great opening.
What, that opening or happening will be, I don't know yet. Am I ready for the ride? I don't know that either.
Thus when I read of what Raven 'Speaks', I was stunned. Stunned because there are messages I received from the Wheel, I did not understand, but right there in my hand writing in my journal, was the indication what the message Raven Brings.
Such as on 4/4/12 ...I simply wrote the words almost like a list,
Four sided star, Cosmos, Sands of Time, and then as you know, a couple weeks ago, Crow came to me with a message from afar.
I was also reminded with Reiki I can heal from a distance. Which took me back to some other messages I had written down, though I did not fully understand. I'm not really sure I totaly do now, but I can see the connection, and my understanding is becoming clearer.
So, what does Raven speak of;
Magic is in the air and something special is about to happen. Be careful of your intentions, because that's what will manifest.
Watch for messages in dreams. Ravens are the Keepers of wisdom and knowledge from ancestors.
You are gradually 'shape-shifting' into a more confident, powerful and spiritually based...you. But you must let go of the old you.
Native Americans describe Raven a symbol of change/transformation, metamorphosis, and bearer of magic.
Raven foretells of messages from the cosmos of someone or something coming.
Messages told only for those within the tribe who are worthy of the knowledge.
The Raven is also called upon in Native ritual for healing purposes. Specifically, long-distance healing.
Number two=Feminine, dreams, cooperation.
Black=Protection, birth, magic
Reminder of what Eagle 'Speaks'
There will be a new beginning in a positive direction. It is time of great spiritual awakening. Inspiration from the Divine, so heed any guidance
Number One=Beginnings, Originality, Leader
White=Purity, Sharing, Truth
Brown=Grounded, New Growth
Well I guess I'm going to be busy:)
I was going through some old blog entries, while updating Herbs & Things Web site and blog, and I read one from Oct 22nd 2008.
In it I wrote about my sister and my horse Mike...
It is about being inspired by a quote from a horse magazine.
That quote...
Life is a Ride
The important thing about choosing your path in life isn’t about where you are going, but who you bring along.
As I read the blog, I came across a sentence that brought teas to my eyes. It was a sentence that showed me the connection between Madeline and me
Because what she said to me, back then in Oct 2008... was one of the last things I said to her when she was in the hospital.
I had gone in to see her, and as I sat down beside her bed, she looked at me and said, "Oh Kellie, it's OK, you don't have to be here."
and what I told her was almost verbatim to what she said to me back in Oct. 2008...

More Frugal-Really? Tricia Crisafulli is coming to Herbs & Things
We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely
admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.
~Author Unknown
I was a little bothered, when I went to the Wheel Thursday the 19th to ask some questions, and one of the answers was
"Live more frugally."
Really?
OK, I thought, so maybe I've been eating out and getting take out more often than I usually do, but it's been kind of well, I'll call...an off few weeks here you know. Besides, I think I live more frugal than some, yet I know not as frugal as others or as frugal as I could. Ok you hit on a soft spot and yes you are probably right,I could live a more frugally, couldn't we all? But jeeze why are you, chastising me, I make my own bread, can much of my garden and meats, make croutons and bread crumbs. I don't go on vacations. I drive around as little as possible. I don't drive new vehicles, or buy a lot of clothes. I don't have an automatic dishwasher, or air conditioning. Just how much more frugal do you want me to be?
I felt sad, or slighty defeated, as my...thoughts took me to my guilt about eating out to much the past 3-4 weeks, spending hard earned monies, that were gone in a second. Which started, only because it was easier when Madeline was in the hospital on top of some other things that decided they needed to happen at the same time, than coming home and making a meal. But I realized too, because it was so easy to stop, buy and let someone else do it. IT...could so easily become a habit that is to costly and I must put a stop to, literally putting money down the drain.
But a glutton for punishment, I continued the 'conversation'....and asked....
OK..here's the deal, I've already chastised myself about doing this, and rectifying it, so why are you already telling me something I'm already fixing...
Answer
When we say frugal it's not what you are thinking it is, but yes you are wise to cut down on your eating out, and leave it for special occasion like when you were a child. But search frugal and see what we mean when we say, Live more frugal.
So, I searched and was surprised...
Not only does frugal mean to live thriftily by how not to spend your monies on stuff you don't need, but also....
Frugality, in the context of certain belief systems, is a philosophy in which one does not trust (or is deeply wary of) "expert" knowledge, often from commercial markets or corporate cultures, claiming to know what is in the best economic, material, or spiritual interests of the individual
There are also environmentalists who consider frugality to be a virtue through which humans can make use of their ancestral skills as hunter-gatherers, carrying little and needing little, and finding meaning in nature instead of man-made conventions or religion.
So how do you like them apples:) Another important lesson from the Wheel.
So Mother Nature I guess is as excited about 2012 as many of us are. First the abundance of Robins, with their Red breast telling us of new awakenings and now the abundance of
Red Admiral Butterflies that even made the news...
So what is Butterfly telling us and what do the colors say...
Butterfly 'Speaks' of
Transmutation and the Dance of Joy. It's all about transformation, metamorphosis and shapeshifting. In early Christianity it was the symbol of the soul. To the Native Americans the butterfly is they symbol of change, color and joy.
The Colors
Orange--Warmth,joy,creativity
Brown--Grounded, new growth
Red--passion, strength
I am so excited!
Even though it's in the process of coming together and a few months away, I have to tell you.

Some decisions are harder to make than others from Herbs & Things April 17th newsletter
Hello From Herbs & Things:)
I think that no matter how old or infirm I may become. I will always plant a large garden in the spring. Who can resist the feelings of hope and joy that one gets from participating in nature's rebirth?
~Edward Giobbi~
It's that time again...Garden time.I'm excited and hoping for a better garden this year. I am doing something different...trying raised bed gardening. My thinking it make things a little easier, plus my soil hasn't seemed to be producing as well as it use too, but that could because I am not taking the time to till, feed and care for it like I use to either. The infamous clay/topsoil, mix in this valley needs a little help for growing certain things. It took about as long to make and fill four 4x8 raised beds as it does to till and get the one garden ready. And I'll be adding two more raised beds, to put in the potato and squash garden.
Actually it was very nice, my husband Rick had some rare few days off in a row and he built the boxes and helped me fill them. This was definitely a treat for me:)
I plan on growing tomatoes, strawberries, beets, carrots, beans, maybe cucumbers and a few companion plants in the raised beds. Potato's, squash, maybe corn in the ground garden and cabbage, turnip, parsnips in the raised beds. Time will tell on how I like the raised beds :)
Some decisions are harder to make than others...but first I'd like to tell you Colden is starting their own Farmers Market. Sat May 19th in the parking lot of the Bread of Life Outreach center in the town of Colden NY. (the old Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic church).
The decision...? As many of you know I've been at the Holland Farmers Market for four years on Sundays and I love everyone there, but I also have been a resident of Colden for almost 58 years and I feel I should support Colden, and the Bread of Life. Plus (Lady of the Sacred Heart) holds many memories for me as it does many people in Colden, and it feels enticing to spend time in the place Rick and I were married in 1977, where I made my First Communion and Confirmation. Where my nieces were baptized, made their first communion, and confirmation and one niece was married, as was my late sister and her husband in 1961.
With that said, what I've decided to do is...both Farmers market every other weekend, so selfishly not to fill up all my weekends. I guess I am getting a little lazy too, because this way I'll only have to take the shop apart every other week to pack and unpack.
So join us at the first Coldens' Farmers Market, Saturday May 19th 8am-1PM. Hope to see you there. I'll have teas, spices, maple almonds, Yancy Fancy cheese and curds, Spices in grinders, fresh garlic and other nice things and maybe fresh eggs, (if I don't sell them before then.) I'll also try to have herb and vegetable plants and later, some fresh vegetables, what ever is in season. If you have any ideas of what you'd like to see or buy at the Farmers Market please let me know.

Confirmation of Crow message
Hello From Herbs & Things:) There is a way that nature speaks, that land speaks. Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, quiet enough to pay attention to the story. ~Linda Hogan~
Confirmation...
Verification of a fact or evidence
The act of confirming.
Biblical Confirmation...Confirmed you are gifted with the Holy Spirit
Words, pictures, music of something that confirms one thing is somehow related to another; Verification of messages received from an 'unlikely' source.
Those who have taken the Medicine Helper, Spirit Guide and meditation classes offered at Herbs & Things, have heard me mention, after you get a message, see a symbol, or feel something has spoke to you, to always ask for and wait for, a confirmation. To ask that this confirmation be shown in a way you'll understand, that you did receive a message or information correctly and to show also via this confirmation to the messages validity.
This brings me back to last week's newsletter when I wrote of Crow and the personal message I mentioned that I received. But, if you remember, I did not say what that message was:) Good thing too, because now I can tell you what message I thought Crow brought me, 2 days after my sister's passing.
Why can I tell you the message now and not then? If I would have told you, it would have been thrown out in to the universe for every one to react on and kind of put in to a whirl wind of confusion. Thus the confirmation came quickly and though I did not get it right away when it was first put in front of me, once I did, I understood clearly it was my confirmation and that I had understood the message correctly Crow brought.
The Wednesday after Madeline passed, I was looking out the living room window, when a small Crow 'caught' my attention. Watching this Crow I got the impression it was a little lost or not quite familiar how to do Crow things or where it was supposed to be going or doing. You know like someone stepping off a bus in a strange place and does the look over of the area to better acquaint themselves with the area and hopefully see something they understand or that looks familiar, thus knowing what to do next.
A few seconds after noticing this one Crow, from around the back of the Chestnut Tree came two other Crows. They had a maturity that the first Crow did not. I immediately knew, that something from an ordinary every day thing was giving me a message and that I must look, and feel beyond the ordinary.
So I watched as the two 'older' Crows showed the less sure Crow how to do things. My first gut feeling was, it was in reference to, that my Mother and Father were with my Sister, helping her with her transition. The two 'mature' Crows seemingly were showing the one how to fly over the fence and land just on the other side, then hop around and gather horse hair...the two 'older' crows were showing the 3rd the 'ropes' of it's new life.
I also knew that this was not this years baby Crow, it is to early...but it was a young one, a 'yearling' not sure of it's steps.
The next day after putting out the newsletter about the Crows gathering hair in the corral...I received an email from Rachel F. about something she learned of the meaning of Crow.
What she learned was Crow sometimes speaks of another life coming into this world...
Though my message, via the three Crows was not about another life coming into this world, I do believe the personal message for me was, about another being help and guided from this life into another world...So from Rachel's email, take special notice of the number 3 and see the connection and confirmation, of the 'message's' significance of the 3 crows I received and 'saw'.
Hey Kellie, I found this after reading more about crows. They are very tied into Japanese beliefs. I also said to Kathy, that with your sisters passing and my friends that there is another life brought into this world.
1 for sorrow
2 for joy
3 for a girl
4 for a boy
5 for silver
6 for gold
7 for a secret never to be told
So now really, is that too cool or what:)3 Crows= a Girl=that girl Madeline:)
It's the little things like this, that when you question yourself if you are really 'hearing', 'seeing' or 'getting it', tells you that...you are:)
that third Crow signified and Crow was showing, this was in reference to my sister...the girl...being helped...
And OH, just a reminder if Crows comes to you...and what message(s) it could be bringing.
Crow speaks of magic around you...and good luck. They speak of the magical ability to re-create your life.
Crow is adaptable to it's environment, they work as a family and with each other in their community. they usually have a appointed sentinel which warns of danger or sometimes a treasure in a corral for building nests:)
Number 3-Creativity, mystical, birth.Wink wink--Gotta love it:)

Crows Speak~from April 3rd 2012 Herbs & Things newsletter
I still find them amazing even after 57 years of living here on this same corner....What you ask?
The animals.
We could learn so much from them if we'd just 'listen' watch and learn.
I've had 3 crows visiting my front lawn, area around the house and barn for the past few days. With them they brought a personal message, which I've processed and will ultimately try to apply to my life.
But they've made me again aware of how, nature uses nature to live and doesn't destroy it's self in the process.
Marty and King, the horses, are shedding their winter coats. When they roll around in the corral, they leave white patches of hair on the ground.
Thus, I've been enjoying watching those crows, working hard gathering that hair, and with beak full of white hair, almost like a chipmunk with stuffed cheeks...they fly to where I assume their 'home' is. What's really cool besides the contrast of the white hair against the black color of the crow, is how they can build their house, with nothing but left overs from Mother Nature, in the form of twigs, hay, and or hair from shedding horses.
When I thought about it, I asked myself, are those twigs, hay strands and loose hair really seen as left overs?
I don't think the crows look at it like that. I think they see the hair as a found treasure of white in the middle of a corral.
It's the way nature is...one species provides for another, in some shape or form... they in one way or another co-exist.
Now if only we, the human race could do a better job of co-existing and adapting with nature such as this, we and the earth would be so much better.
What if Crow comes to you, what message could it bring? Crow speaks of magic around you...and good luck. They speak of the magical ability to re-create your life.
Crow is adaptable to it's enviroment, they work as a family and with each other in their community. they usually have a appointed sentinel which warns of danger or sometimes a treasure in a corral for building nests:)
